Church History

The First Baptist Church of West Mifflin, in the area known at that time as Munhall Terrace, was organized on Sunday, August 3, 1903 by Rev. J. Tibbs at the home of Mr. & Mrs. James Baltimore at 3119 Virginia Avenue.  Rev. James Johnson was installed by Rev. Tibbs as the first pastor of the newly organized church.  In the fall of 1903, Pastor Johnson along with men from the community erected a church building at 450 Homestead Avenue in Munhall Terrace.
Since the pastorate of Rev. Johnson, several other pastors have led the congregation.  During their leadership, many changes to the physical church building were made, including erecting a parsonage.  Then in 1968, the congregation joyously marched through the streets of West Mifflin from the Homestead Avenue site to its current location at 3427 Cypress Street.

While at the current location, several renovations have been made over the years, and are still in progress, to accommodate the needs of the congregation and community.
Regardless of the location or physical state of the First Baptist Church of West Mifflin, its ultimate purpose is to edify the church body, win souls to Christ and make disciples as instructed by Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20.  This is accomplished through the public worship of our sovereign God, proclaiming the Gospel of his son Jesus Christ, and living a consistent Christian life empowered by his Holy Spirit.  To this end, the congregation participates in group and individual evangelism, performs and supports home and foreign mission efforts, and provides structured and consistent programs of Christian Education based on God’s Holy Word.
